Caring for your spine with Chiropractic (By Bethany Higgins – Chiropractor at Victoria Point Chiropractic)

The following are some questions you may ask of yourself if improving your general health and that of your spine is an important consideration.

Do I

  • maintain a healthy diet and weight?
  • keep active with an exercise regime suited to my state of health?
  • maintain proper posture and avoid prolonged inactivity?
  • warm up or stretch before exercising or other physical activities?
  • wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes?
  • ensure my computer workstation is ergonomically correct?
  • sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to assist appropriate sleep postures?
  • use a pillow that suits my size, shape and sleep pattern?
  • use my knees, keep the object close to my body and don’t twist when lifting?
  • consider my emotional welfare an important part of general health?
  • smoke? Smoking impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to spinal tissues.
  • note how my body is feeling? Tight muscles, various types and levels of pain and restricted movement can be symptoms of diminished spinal function.
  • understand what Chiropractic is and know how it works?

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care profession focusing on disorders of the Musculoskeletal and Nervous System and the effects of these disorders on general health.

Chiropractic is most often used to treat Neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to headaches, back pain, neck pain and pain in the joints of the arms and legs.

Chiropractic treatment of affected joints and tissues restores mobility, thereby alleviating inflammation, pain and muscle tightness which allows tissues to heal. Treatment is often referred to by terminology such as adjustment or manipulation.

How does chiropractic work?

Chiropractors restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile or restricted in their movement as a result of a tissue injury.

Treatment aims to restore proper spinal and peripheral joint biomechanics which will result in alleviating or preventing further damage and discomfort.

Chiropractors aim to assist recovery and promote general health by providing advice on exercise, diet, ergonomics, and referring to other health care professionals for opinion and treatment.
